| McLean's wife stays on the move, lawyer says
In affidavits filed in Knox County Fourth Circuit Court, Eric McLean and his divorce attorney, Steve Sharp, allege former West High School student teacher Erin McLean is embarked on a rootless existence with a 19-year-old paramour. "(Erin McLean) has been to California and then to Austin, Texas, staying in cheap motels and then moving when she is unable to pay the bills," Sharp wrote. Attorney Bruce Poston, who is defending Eric McLean on charges that he killed Sean Powell, his wife's teenage student and lover, in March, said Tuesday Erin McLean has since surfaced in Boulder, Colo. Sharp has been trying to serve Erin McLean with divorce papers since September to no avail in an effort to gain custody of the couple's sons, ages 11 and 8. It was then that Erin McLean fled her mother's Nashville home with the boys after news surfaced that she had lied to get a job as a teacher at a private Christian school and allegedly tried to seduce a 17-year-old student.
ECU bus passengers out of hospital
An East Carolina University bus with two student passengers aboard veered into oncoming traffic on 10th Street between Charles Boulevard and Evans Street on Thursday. The driver, Nathen James Rennels, who is also an ECU student, lost consciousness at the wheel and crashed into cars, a transformer and utility poles, Greenville police said. No one suffered life-threatening injuries in the wreck, an ECU official said. The bus driver suffered a medical episode that lead to his loss of consciousness, Greenville Police Cpl. Kip Gaskins said. Rennels and the two students on board were transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The passengers were later released, university spokesman John Durhman said. "He piled into something like eight cars coming from the other direction," said ECU sophomore Lauren Veal, whose westbound car was stopped at 10th and Charles when the bus passed her.
Natick woman critical after Friday wreck
A Natick woman remains in "very critical" condition after a five-car crash last Friday, police said yesterday. The accident is still being investigated by both the Framingham Police Department and the Middlesex District Attorney's office. No one has been charged or cited in the accident. Investigators may have video evidence of the crash because a limousine involved was equipped with a special camera. The accident occurred at the intersection of Speen Street and Rte. 30 around 4:50 p.m., police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said. Two vehicles were turning left from Rte. 30 to Speen Street when witnesses say a BMW sports utility vehicle plowed into the cars. One of the drivers of the vehicles that were hit was knocked unconscious and appeared to have head injuries.

Local billionaire Daryl Katz is willing to buy the Edmonton Oilers for $188 million, but the team's shareholders remain split on whether to sell. Thirty-four members of the Edmonton Investors Group met Monday behind closed doors to discuss Katz's latest offer to purchase 7,492 shares in the team by Jan. 31 at $20.56 per share. The Edmonton Oilers are worth $188 million to local tycoon Darryl Katz. (Jimmy Jeong/Canadian Press) Katz, a reclusive businessman who owns the Rexall pharmacy empire, has offered to purchase the Oilers four times in less than a year. But the 46-year-old tycoon didn't attend the meeting. "He offered to come but, as I understand it, the invite was conditional and I think, under the circumstances, he chose not to do it," said former EIG chairman Cal Nichols, who remains a shareholder in the team.
S.F. Zoo mauling investigation winding down
The police investigation into the tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo will soon be reclassified as "inactive" after a search failed to turn up evidence that the victims taunted the animal or committed other crimes, authorities said Friday. Sources close to the case said the investigation into the Christmas Day attack could be shelved as soon as next week and will not be reopened unless new information comes to light. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for the department. A police spokesman, Sgt. Neville Gittens, said that "right now, (the investigation) is still open and active." On Wednesday, police investigators searched the car and the cell phones belonging to the two brothers who survived the attack that killed 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr.
