Belkin TuneTalk Stereo for iPod with video

The prevailing wisdom was that the iPod was a media playback device rather than a recorder, so the release of new iPod firmware to support the first microphone - Belkin's $50 Voice Recorder (iLounge rating: B) - was a breakthrough. But as noted in our review back then, older iPods were only decent recording devices: Apple limited the iPod to recording 8KHz, 16-bit monaural WAV audio files - one minute of recording per Megabyte - which was space-consuming, low-fidelity, and as suggested by Belkin's accessory, suitable basically only for voices, and not for music.

Nearly three years later, a lot has changed. iPod 3G- and 4G-ready voice recorders are physically incompatible with fifth-generation models - a shame - but to compensate, Apple has substantially improved the latest iPods' recording abilities.

Shearer turns down Magpies' number two role

However, he could yet be handed a significant role on Keegan's staff after holding lengthy talks with the new Magpies boss on Thursday night.

A Keegan-Shearer dream ticket was the talk of Tyneside in the immediate wake of Sam Allardyce's departure earlier this month, and the 56-year-old's admission he would be talking to the man for whom he paid 15million back in the summer of 1996 as he was officially unveiled a week ago sparked a fresh wave of optimism.

But the two men will meet again on Monday for fresh discussions having agreed that while the 37-year-old former England skipper could have a major part to play, it will not be as assistant manager.

Asked if he had spoken to Shearer, Keegan said: 'Yes I have.

'I had four hours in his company last night.

TI explores new realms for DLP beyond TVs

A stroll through any electronics store reveals a multimillion-dollar problem for Texas Instruments Inc. Retailers keep stocking more flat-screen televisions and fewer of the rear-projection models that use chips from the Dallas-based company.

Although TI never reveals sales figures for its digital light processor chips, public disclosures show the size of the problem. DLP revenue fell 21 percent from the third quarter of 2006 to the third quarter of 2007.

The entire decline stems from a single limitation of the 21-year-old invention: DLP is a projection technology, requiring space between chips and screens, so it won't work in the wafer-thin TVs that most Americans want.

But TI isn't writing off the untold millions that it has spent to create DLP technology and refine the DLP brand.

Brothers modest over Oscar triumphs

It was a special year in respect that all the movies made this year were very interesting to me personally and that's not always the case," said Joel Coen during a post-Oscar interview.

"There were fantastically good movies. We just adapted a novel by a great American, Cormac McCarthy, and tried to do justice to the novel."

The brothers also tried to explain their unique working methods when it came to making the film.

"We've always made movies the same way," said Joel.

"There's no division of labour. It's a collaborative effort from top to bottom."
