Diggbrow: How The Internet Redefined Art

"Art" is just another headline-filler word for "amazing." At least for children, who are the future, and geeks, who are the new trendsetter-influencer-coolhunters. Since K-12 art education is virtually dead, and no one reads books, these heavy Internet users have no preconceptions of art and they don't follow that world's big names. A new Cy Twombly or Lucien Freud painting won't get attention on Digg (Chris Ofili maybe, for the controversy), but a painted Lamborghini is one of the social news site's all-time favorite "art" posts. But it's not all bad. The Diggbrow movement isn't destroying art any more than the Dadaists or post-modernists did; it's reinventing it.

The heavy Internet users of Digg, YouTube, Fark, and StumbleUpon have little background in the usual experience of art: a rich education that lets viewers appreciate a work in context.

Keegan reveals rift with Shearer

Keegan, who signed Shearer for £15million from Blackburn Rovers in July 1996 during his first stint as Newcastle boss, offended the former striker after he failed to attend his testimonial against Celtic.

But Keegan is ready to end the 18-month rift which has seen the once close duo rarely contact each other.

"I would like to think there is no animosity there but if you are asking me if Alan rings me as much as he used to, then no he doesn't," he said. "I couldn't come to Alan's testimonial as I was on a family holiday in the US and I didn't come back for it.

"Things like that, sadly, may have affected him. But it hasn't affected me and I want to talk with Alan. It is possibly true that it did offend him in some way. But flying all the way from America is something I would not have expected him to do for me.

JEFF WOLF: Business should steer clear of NHRA

The 54th season for NHRA professional drag racing opened Thursday with the Winternationals, which runs through Sunday in Pomona, Calif.

Six weeks ago I predicted this would be a tumultuous season for the NHRA, and sadly it's starting that way.

The NHRA has been hit hard after making positive changes regarding safety, qualifying format and how its professional champions will be determined.

Two weeks ago, while popular Top Fuel driver and team owner Doug Herbert was testing his dragster near Phoenix, his sons were killed in a car crash near their Cornelius, N.C., home. Herbert is dedicating the season to Jon, 17, and James, 12, calling this season the "For My Boys" tour.

02/11/08 Letters to the Editor

To the editor -- Imagine, if for just one day, everyone in the Yakima Valley honored one another above themselves. Consider how that decision would play out in just one 24-hour period of your daily life.

This idea is rich with the possibilities of undeserved kindness, grace gently extended in the place of judgment and a community characterized by love and mercy. And then imagine if we were so bold as to conduct ourselves in that manner for longer than just one day! The fruits of such an exercise would contribute powerfully to creating the kind of health we want in our community, including the support of a school system striving to do its best by our children.

If not for just one day, please consider honoring one another above yourself with a single yes vote for the Yakima School District levy.

Commission, tourism board disagree on welcome center design

CURRITUCK — A rift between county commissioners and the tourism board over design and other issues may hold up renovation of a former car dealership into a county welcome center.

The Board of Commissioners formally agreed Monday to spend $1.55 million for the former Courtesy Ford dealership building on N.C. Highway 168 in Moyock. The plan is now to get the building renovated as a welcome center and open by April, in time for the start of the tourist season.
