FONTANA, Calif. — NASCAR officials finally gave in to the weepers.
After trying for nearly five hours to get the two-mile oval at Auto Club Speedway dry, NASCAR called it a day, postponing the completion of the Sprint Cup series Auto Club 500 until Monday at noon. The drivers had completed 87 of the scheduled 250 laps when a heavy downpour caused the third delay of the day. The race finally began about 2½ hours after its scheduled noon start time, but it was slowed by two early crashes and then halted as NASCAR and track officials looked for a way to stop the weepers - places where water seeped through the seams of the 2-mile oval. Both Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr., involved in separate crashes in the early going, were critical of the track, blaming the wet conditions for their problems. Hamlin slid up the track and hit the wall hard on lap 14 of the 250-lap event.
Kenya rivals to rewrite constitution - govt
The former U.N. chief is due to brief the press on Friday. Opposition leader Raila Odinga accuses Kibaki's team of rigging the Dec. 27 vote while Kibaki says he won fairly. Kenyans have been calling for a new constitution since the early 1990s to replace one dating back to the eve of independence from Britain in 1963, which critics say fosters graft and tribalism because of the president's immense powers. The last attempt to pass a new constitution failed in 2005 when Kenyans rejected a government-backed draft in a referendum. OPTIMISM VS REALITY In a bid to shore up Annan's mission, U.S. President George W. Bush has asked Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to head to Kenya to tell its leaders there must be a return to democracy.
Democrats dread drawn-out, costly campaign
And especially you can't undo an election where 1.7 million Florida Democrats have gone to vote in a secret ballot and replace it with a caucus that maybe 50,000 people would show up," Nelson added. One thing is clear: The longer that Clinton and Obama go at it, the more it will cost them. In a conference call Friday, Clinton's campaign announced she has raised $8 million online since polls closed in California on Tuesday and nearly $10 million online since February 1. And 75,000 new donors pledged their financial support to Clinton since polls closed on Super Tuesday, according to her campaign. On Thursday, the Illinois senator's campaign announced it had raised $7.2 million in the first 36 hours after polls closed on Super Tuesday.
